Portimão

The small town of Portimão, part of the district of Faro, is the largest municipality in western Algarve. There are over 55,000 inhabitants as well as many non-habitual residents who spend their holidays here to enjoy a temperate climate all year round and beautiful, long golden beaches.

Thanks to the confluence of the fresh and warm waters of the river Arade with the salty and rich fish fauna of the Atlantic, Portimão has a long fishing tradition spanning a wide variety of techniques.

The most important development of the city took place between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the advent of the canning industry and tourism, a period that the buildings in the old town date back to. The Museum of Portimão, whose original structure dates back to this period, is an old cannery that in 2010 received the European Council Award as “Museum of the Year”. For lovers of History and architecture, the Chapel of São José de Alcalar and the imposing church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) dating back to the 15th century are vantage points from whence you can admire the whole city, given its position on top of a hill located on the northern outskirts.

The city of Portimão, Algarve - Portugal

A natural crossroad of History, culture, typically Portuguese landscape and local flavours

The seafront of Marina de Portimão, recently restored and maintained in good condition, allows for relaxing walks both during the day and in the evening.

Here you can breathe in an authentic Portuguese atmosphere by walking through the alleys where once only fishermen lived and where you can now admire the renowned local architecture with the exterior tiling of various colors and come across numerous places to experience local and traditional refreshments.

Not to be missed is the "seaside resort" of Portimão, Praia da Rocha, which offers immense and well-kept beaches. On the promenade overlooking the seafront, naturally much more touristic and commercial, you can find a multitude of small rooms with an international flavour, hotels and apartments with full-on ocean views.
